  • Woman’s petticoat of shot green (warp) and yellow silk taffeta, lined with undyed wool. It is quilted in running stitch with green silk thread in a ¾-inch diamond pattern. The petticoat is made of 7 panels of silk with pocket openings in the side seams bound with ⅞-inch dark green wool tape. The same tape binds the hem. The petticoat is pieced at the waist with green poplin. There is a wide box pleat at centre front with pleats on each side and pleats either side of the centre back opening. The waist is bound with 1-inch (2.5 cm) wide linen tape, which forms the ties. (en)
  • Quilted petticoats were popular throughout the 18th century for informal dress. They were both decorative and practical. (en)
