- n. From the Persian "shāl", first adopted by Urdu and other Indian languages and from them, into all European languages. Originally a fabric article worn by Asian people in the shape of a scarf, turban or girdle, manufactured in Kashmir. Nowadays it is a clothing article worn, mainly by women, as a covering for the head and/or shoulders. It is an oblong or square piece, of any textile or netted fabric that can be woven, knitter or crocheted by hand or machine from natural or manufactured fibres. (en)
- Subst. fém. Empr. du provençal manta, de même sens. Vêtement féminin, ample et sans manche, souvent dôté d'un capuchon, qui était porté au-dessus des autres vêtements pour se protéger du froid. De nos jours, certaines religieuses portent également une mante. Une mante désignait aussi un long voile noir porté par les femmes en signe de deuil. (fr)

Nacida como pieza de abrigo que se lleva sobre los hombros, tanto en España como en Hispanoamérica, alcanza el rango de manto lujoso y se conserva como objeto de la indumentaria tradicional hasta el siglo XX.
