Three out of four applied borders for a shawl measuring 54" x 53" which would have been folded into equal figures so that both borders would have been shown, one slightly above the other, at the back. The borders are in two widths, two wider ones and one surviving narrow one. There is an applied fringe of cream silk.
The borders are woven in mid-blue, olive green, bright red, white and black wool and yellow silk on a black silk warp in a regular 1/3 twill. Defining the edges of the borders the white wool is used to make a black and white banded edge.
On the wider borders small shawl motifs protrude inwards from the sides and the centre contains a continuous floral meander with angular flowers heads and sprays of berries.
The narrow border contains a repeat of an angular shawl motif with flower head and leaf motifs protruding from the edges in the spaces between.
