  • These large fragments of finely woven silk velvet would have been part of a large floor-covering. The deep red field is achieved by dyeing with the expensive insect dye called lac.The rows of single flowers are typical of 'classic' Mughal design, which was used in objects in all media from the mid-17th century onwards. The deep red of the ground appears to change colours with the direction of the velvet pile, so that although these two pieces are dyed the same colours, one appears much lighter than the other. (en)
