  • Woman's petticoat, 1750-1780, British; Rose-pink silk satin, quilted in a diamond pattern, altered 1870- 1910 (en)
  • Woman's petticoat made of rose pink silk satin, lined with glazed undyed linen and wadded with a thin layer of wool. There is a square of dark purple-pink glazed wool at the upper centre back and the area around and below it was heavily pieced with the satin, before the quilting was done. It is quilted in running stitch with pink silk thread in diamond pattern made with two lines of stitching. The petticoat is made of 4 panels of silk, in addition the pieced section at the back. There are pocket openings in the side seams, bound with 1-inch (2.5 cm) wide pink silk ribbon. The same ribbon binds the hem. The petticoat appears to have been altered twice, once with the addition of glazed pink linen at the waist, possibly in the late 18th century for a taller wearer. A deep waistband of linen and linen ties were added, probably in the late 19th century, either for fancy dress or a theatre costume. (en)
