Hopkins in 1871 [2006-2012] Man's ikat robe of silk, Uzbekistan (probably Samarqand), about 1860-70. Ikat dyeing is a speciality of the cities of Uzbekistan, especially Bukhara and Samarqand. Ikat is a resist-dyeing technique in which the warp threads (and sometimes also the wefts) are tie-dyed to create the pattern before the fabric is woven. Robes like this were made for Uzbek men. Silk ikat robe in red, white, yellow, black, and green.
