Verwijst naar de stijl van inktschilderen die letterlijk 'breekinkt' betekent en is gebaseerd op contrasten van lichtere en donkere lagen, stippen of lijnen. Hiernaar werd het eerst verwezen in Chinese teksten in 847 n. Chr.; de stijl verscheen het eerst in Japan in de 14de eeuw en werd toegepast tot in de 17de eeuw. Refers to the style of ink painting which literally means "break ink," based on contrasts of tonal washes and darker washes, dots or lines. First refered to in Chinese texts in 847 CE, the style first appeared in Japan in the 14th century, continuing through the 17th century. 指一種水墨畫風格,「破墨」來自淡墨與濃墨的對比、以點或線呈現。西元847年時首度於中國文本中提及,十四世紀首度出現於日本,一直持續至十七世紀。
