In het algemeen te gebruiken voor tussenwanden in religieuze en Romeinse keizerlijke gebouwen en openluchtlocaties tussen gewijde en wereldse ruimten of tussen bepaalde keizerlijke en openbare ruimten. In joodse context specifiek te gebruiken voor tussenwanden voor Torah-altaars, voornamelijk tijdens of voor de Byzantijnse tijd, en in christelijke kerken voor tussenwanden die het koor scheiden van het schip van de kerk, vooral als het koor geen zangkoor bevat. Gebruik 'koorafsluitingen' voor de schermen om het zangkoor als de koristen in het koor zitten.
