Woman's petticoat, 1720-40, British; beige fustian, embroidered crewelwork flowers Woman’s petticoat of 6 panels of half-bleached fustian (linen warp, cotton weft) twill. Each panel was embroidered first then sewn together and hemmed. Each is decorated with a border of flowers and leaves, worked in chain and satin stitches, French knots with worsted thread in yellow, shades of red, green and brown. The ground of each panel is backstitched in a vermicelli pattern in pale yellow silk thread. The fustian is pieced at the waist and pocket openings have been cut into the side panels and bound with ⅝-inch (1.5 cm) wide linen tape. There is a wide box pleat at centre front with side pleats and an inverted box pleat at the centre back with pleats on either side. The waist is bound with 1-inch (2.5 cm) wide linen tape, forming the ties.
