Cap of embroidered linen in silk, England, 1700-1750 Cap of embroidered white linen in yellow silk. The cap is formed of four shaped panels tapering towards the crown where there is a button, and its wooden core is covered with silk thread. The panels have a quatrefoil medallion outlined in cross stitch and filled with a circular floral design the petals in button hole stitch, and the centre in a diaper of stem stitch with satin stitch spots. From the top of this rises a curving fern leaf, the stem in cross stitch, and the leaves in satin and stem stitches. There are two smaller pine shaped leaves flanking it. The ground is covered with a vermicular design in back stitch. The brim is embroidered. It is a single piece with a wider curved front, and shaped at the sides by gathering at the top. The cap is shaped to fit the head and half cover the ears. The lining is of white linen and there is a linen draw thread to adjust the size.
