This workbox for sewing tools was made in the mid 19th century, when China trade was taken over from the East India Company by private trading houses. It combines western design with Chinese decoration. The figures, pagodas and junks do not carry a meaning in Chinese terms. They only served to underline the foreign nature of the product.
