Hanging, linen embroidered with silk in surface darning on the diagonal over 3 threads. A solid green line forms the border. The field is decorated with zigzag parallel stems which are blue and contain cream tulips on a green leafy stem punctuated at intervals by a red spot. The stem is broken at intervals by a stylised cream cloud-band or crown motif. Small green stems branch from the blue ones and bear cream or blue and red tulips. Thicker blue stems branch off, each bearing a large red tulip with an internal pattern of yellow tulips, green leafy stem and white spots. Made from three widths joined after being embroidered. The oldest Ottoman embroideries in the V&A date from the 16th or 17th centuries. They are either whole covers and wall hangings or fragments of them. They are decorated with large-scale, bold designs in red, blue, green and yellow, with some white and black.
