Cover, linen embroidered with silk in regular surface darning over 5 threads and running stitch (border). The border has a meandering red stem from which a pair of blue leaves alternate with a green curving stem and a red flower which contains a small tulip in reserve. The field is divided into pointed ogees by a thick red lattice, outlined with blue. The lattice contains a fine line in reserve with a small blue flower head at intervals. The ogees contain three green stems secured at their base by a red cloudband. Each stem ends in a red flower similar to those in the border. The ogee also contains three pairs of blue leaves. Made from two widths joined after being embroidered. The oldest Ottoman embroideries in the V&A date from the 16th or 17th centuries. They are either whole covers and wall hangings or fragments of them. They are decorated with large-scale, bold designs in red, blue, green and yellow, with some white and black. The oldest patterns, such as this, are formed by the intersecting lines of a lattice. They enclose spaces filled with floral decoration.
