Red wool waistcoat trimmed with metallic silver braid, 1890s. Worn by the acrobat Pansy Chinery (1879-1969) Red wool waistcoat trimmed with metallic silver braid, 1890s. Worn by the acrobat Pansy Chinery (1879-1969). Deep red wool waistcoat. It has a small upright collar defined with two parallel bands of metallic silver braid. One of these lengths of braid only encircles the collar, the other extends down from the collar, along the front opening, and round the front hem. The top edge of the collar and the edge of the front opening and hem are outlined with a narrow length of gold metallic braid. Further lengths of metallic gold braid have been used to decorate the base of the front panels. This braid detailing is shaped into interlinked swirls and couched in place. The jacket fastens at the front with 9 pairs of alternating hooks and eyes. The proper left edge is also trimmed with a vertical line of gold circular metal beads. The rear panels of the waistcoat are formed from a lightweight red wool/cotton blend fabric. Two narrow fabric straps, connected by a metal buckle, are positioned at the base of the rear panel (allowing the wearer to adjust the fit) at this point. The interior of the waistcoat is faced with a dark cream cotton.
