Kesa (Buddhist priest's mantle), of brocaded silk, Japan, 18th century Buddhist priest's robe (<i>kesa</i>) of brocaded silk. The garment is made up from three and a half widths of silk. It has a pattern of colourful (red, pink, violet and green) flowers and butterflies in 1/2 twill on a gold 2/1 twill ground. Details are marked in gilt paper strips. The garment is divided by couched cord into a border and many rectangular compartments. There are patches of similar tissue with a salmon ground sewn onto the two lower corners (those in the upper corners have disappeared). The <i>kesa</i> is lined with three and a half widths of white silk with a 5/1 twill pattern of floral scrolls on a 2/1 twill ground. There is an interlining of white paper.
