Chair seat of canvas, embroidered with wool and silk in shades of mustard, yellow, red, pink, green, blue, mauve, grey, beige, brown, cream and black in tent and cross stitches.
The border has a mustard-coloured ground and is patterned with large flowers in bright colours; carnation, lily, convolvulus and peony.
The central embroidered scene, of 'The Shepherd and the Philosopher', is taken from William Kent's illustration for the introduction to 'Gay's Fables'. The initials 'E.W.' are embroidered on one of the trees in the scene.
