Shawl of printed wool and silk gauze. Silk warp and wool weft with bands of wool closely packed, and with plain silk warp and weft at intervals. The deep printed end borders and narrower side borders are a mixture of elongated cone pattern and flowers, some with long curving leaves which counterbalance the movement of the cones. The cones have a maroon centre with an orange guard-stripe to the left and a bright light blue guard stripe to the right. They are on a white ground, but in the borders this can hardly be seen for the wealth of flowers which vie with the mixture of flowers within the cones. The colours are in blue, orange, yellow, pink, and green. From the tops of the end borders and from the side borders, sprays of flowers curve into the plain centre of the shawl. At the two ends a fringe of three-ply white wool is knotted into the shawl. Shawl of printed wool and silk gauze, Great Britain, ca. 1849-1853
