Samplers from Friesland, in the northwest of the Netherlands, are characterized chiefly by many alphabets and a tree of life motif. This sampler also features pierced and crowned hearts (some with birds flanking them and some without), checkerboards, and sewing pillows, motifs typical of samplers from the Netherlands. The year 1682, which was stitched in now faded thread near the bottom of the sampler, is most likely the year in which the maker completed her work.
