Man's dragon robe (longpao) of embroidered silk gauze, probably made in Hangzhou, 1736-1795 Man's dragon robe (longpao) of embroidered silk gauze. Semi-formal wear (jifu). Right side fastening (with five gilt buttons), long and tight sleeves, horse's hoof cuffs (matixiu), and front and back slits. Light blue silk plain weave lining. Brown silk gauze embroidered in coloured silks (red, blue, yellow, white, green ) in counted stitches (nasha and chuosha technique). Collar and cuffs are made of a supplementary weft patterned fabric (gold paper supplementary weft, dark blue ground), sleeves of a dark blue silk. Nine five-clawed dragons- the two at the top centre front and back and the two on the shoulders have their front legs raised, the others, in profile, are holding the flaming pearl. Amongst the turbulent waves round the hem appear six of the eight precious things. The ground embroidered with clouds, bats, peonies, lotus, narcissus and the attributes of the eight Taoist Immortals.
