Textile hanging of linen and silk. Coarse and unbleached linen ground woven with a large scale symmetrical pattern of curving leaves with lattice fillings. This is formed by a pattern weft of low grade silk in light brown, bound in tabby with a very thin and tightly spun binding warp of silk. The material was originally 24 inches wide and a strip has been added to either side to make it a curtain. A plain fringe also in brown silk has been added at the top end of the pattern. The material was woven on a draw loom. Tissue - the binding warp is interwoven with the ground weft.Textile hanging of linen and silk, Italy, 1750-1799
