A woman’s petticoat of dark green silk damask woven in a pattern of large flowers and fruit connected by a thick stem. Technique: damask, satin of 8, decoupure of 12. The petticoat is made from 5 widths of silk and the hem is bound with worsted woven lace (braid), ⅝-inch (1.5 cm) wide. It appears there was once a centre back opening cut into the back panel, and a pocket opening cut into the panel on the left side. The petticoat may have once had a matching gown or sack. It was altered, probably in the late 18th century, probably for a taller wearer. Pieces of matching damask were added to the waist. The petticoat was altered again in the late 19th century, probably for fancy dress. The side pocket opening was sewn up and a waistband of matching damask, with a hook and two eyes, added.
