  • A woman's gown, 1795-99, Scottish; Black silk, 1750-1790, British, long sleeved (en)
  • A woman's gown of black silk. It is open at the front, with long, one-piece sleeves, with a hem casing at the wrist and narrow linen cord drawtring. The gown is made of 4 widths of silk, with a narrow panel of silk at the right front. The silk is finely pleated in twos at the front, and in groups of six at the back, and stitched above waist. The right front of the gown extends into a collar around the back neck, to the left front waist. The bodice front and back on each side are lined, then stitched together at centre back. The bodice front linings are separate from the bodice fronts. The sleeves are lined with linen to the elbow. The edge of the right front hem is curved. There are three silk-covered buttons at the base of the collar at the back neck. A length of narrow black silk ribbon is stitched to each side at the waist. A length of the same ribbon is sewn to the centre back seam of the skirt, 42 cm below the waist Remaining folds and stitch marks suggest that this was made over from an earlier gown. A panel of silk is missing from the left front of the gown. (en)
