The oldest Ottoman embroideries in the V&A date from the 16th or 17th centuries. They are either whole covers and wall hangings or fragments of them. They are decorated with large-scale, bold designs in red, blue, green and yellow, with some white and black. The oldest patterns, such as this, are formed by the intersecting lines of a lattice. They enclose spaces filled with floral decoration.

- Cover, linen embroidered with silk in regular surface darning over 5 threads and running stitch (border).
The border has a meandering red stem from which a pair of blue leaves alternate with a green curving stem and a red flower which contains a small tulip in reserve.
The field is divided into pointed ogees by a thick red lattice, outlined with blue. The lattice contains a fine line in reserve with a small blue flower head at intervals. The ogees contain three green stems secured at their base by a red cloudband. Each stem ends in a red flower similar to those in the border. The ogee also contains three pairs of blue leaves.
Made from two widths joined after being embroidered. (en)
