  • From the mid-nineteenth century into the early twentieth, carpet weaving was a common form of penal labour all over India. Carpets produced in prisons ranged in quality from poor to excellent, certain jails developing reputations for exemplarly productions. According to the inscription woven along its top border, this carpet was a jail production. However, several of the letters making up the name of the jail are inverted or poorly knotted, making it difficult to decipher and so far unidentified. (en)
