These simple but elegant white shoes were worn by Mrs Grimshaw at her wedding in 1810. Her maiden name, Miss E. Brown, is inscribed in the sole. The shoes are typical of the style favoured in the first decade of the 19th century, when classical influences were strong. In both Britain and France, such shoes were often referred to as 'Grecian' slippers or 'Roman' sandals.
