The oldest Ottoman embroideries in the V&A date from the 16th and 17th centuries. They are either whole covers and wall hangings or fragments of them. They are decorated with large-scale, bold designs in red, blue, green and yellow, with some white and black. In the 17th century the main designs were based on wavy parallel stems which run along the length of the fabric.

- Hanging, part, linen embroidered with silk in regular surface darning over 5 threads and split stitch (border).
The border contains a floral meander with a red stem which runs through a red pomegranat and which bears green leaves, blue tulips and a red, blue and yellow flower. The field is decorated with a series of undulating parallel stems in which are incorporated pointed medallions edged with small serated red leaves and which contain a spray of blue hyacinth blossoms. Curving around this medallion is a fine green stem with a small red composite blossom, a white carnation and ending with a red and blue tulip. (en)
