  • Skirt panel of quilted silk, Spitalfields, 1700-1710 (en)
  • Skirt panel of quilted silk. With a pattern in buff linen on a yellow silk ground. The design is asymmetrical. The largest motif is an archway from which hangs an plant. Resting on the arch is an elaborate vase containing another plant. One side of the arch rests on a mushroom-like structure and there are other bizarre devices between the main motifs. There are two comber repeats in the width of the material. With a damask weave, or satin of eight, with a weft-faced pattern on a warp-faced ground. A number of fragments are sewn together to form the skirt. Lined with a coarse worsted woven in tabby with a warp and weft of different colours. The skirt is open to a depth of about 10.5 inches. Quilted in diagonal lines which form a diamond lattice across the textile. Ribbon binding the lower edge. (en)
