  • Door Franse critici bedachte term waarmee een genre films wordt omschreven die zich kenmerken door een donkere, sombere toon en een cynische, pessimistische stemming. Zulke films laten gewoonlijk de duistere, sombere onderwereld van criminaliteit en corruptie zien, waarin zowel de helden als de schurken cynisch en gedesillusioneerd zijn, gevangen in hun verleden en onzeker of apathisch over de toekomst. Typerende voorbeelden van het genre zijn zwart-witfilms uit Hollywood in de jaren 40 en vroege jaren 50 van de 20ste eeuw, hoewel er ook latere voorbeelden in kleur bestaan. (nl)

Typically such films portray the dark and gloomy underworld of crime and corruption with the heroes as well as the villains being cynical and disillusioned, trapped by their pasts and insecure or apathetic about the future.
