  • Verwijst naar het werk van een school van schilders die ontstond in de 9de eeuw en heeft bestaan tot in de 15de eeuw. Dit is een van de vroegste en langst bestaande scholen en deze schilders hebben dan ook een centrale rol gespeeld in het transformeren van de stijl die tijdens de 7de en 8ste eeuw uit China was geïmporteerd, in de klassieke stijl van de Hein-periode die bekend is onder de naam 'Yamato-e'. De school was opgericht door Kose No Kanaoka en de stijl ontwikkelde zich van typisch Chinese onderwerpen, zoals Confucius, naar meer wereldlijke Japanse afbeeldingen, zoals dieren en landschappen.
