| - Een vorm van religieus leven die de perfectie van het individu benadrukt door toetreding tot een gewijde gemeenschap of, minder gangbaar, door een afgezonderd en ascetisch bestaan. Het kloosterleven komt voor in zowel het boeddhisme als het christendom, voornamelijk in de rooms-katholieke en orthodoxe kerken. Hoewel het begon als een christelijke lekenbeweging overheerste de geestelijkheid al snel en werden vrijwillige armoede en een aan aanbidding gewijd leven geïntroduceerd. De Regula Benedicti was de belangrijkste vroege kloosterregel en werd de norm van het westerse christelijke kloosterleven. De bedelorden, die het kloosterleven combineerden met missiewerk en prediking, ontstonden in de 13de eeuw.
