scope note
  • Technique in which paint, usually water-based, is applied directly to textiles, such as linen or silk, with only a very thin glue preparation or no preparation. The result was a subdued tonality and matte surface; however, the advantages were that it was less expensive than other contemporary painting techniques and this technique allowed the work to be rolled and transported. Examples include works by German, Netherlandish, and north Italian artists during the 15th and early 16th centuries. For the technique preferred in Spain and its colonies, where the ground was a thin layer of gesso, prefer "sarga (technique)." (en)
