La palabra literalmente significa "mula" o "híbrido" y es por consiguiente una apropiada descripción de las formas arquitectónicas mixtas encontradas en el Deccan. El estilo incorporó las divisiones verticales y los salientes proyectantes del estilo nagara mientras que mantuvo la estructura general del estilo dravida.
