  • n. Plush is a term which is derived from the French "peluche", which also derives from the Latin "pilus", meaning hair. It is a type of silk, cotton, wool or a combination of them cloth, with a cut pile surface longer than the velvet pile. As a cloth, it is woven as a double plush and cut apart on the loom. Generally it is around 0,32 cm long, but it has no standard lenght. Among its uses we can distinguish the apparel, carpets, draperies, uphosltery, etc. When it has inferior quality it is known as plushette. (en)

On donne le nom de peluches à des étoffes veloutées du côté de l'endroit, composées d'une simple trame de fil de laine et d'une double chaîne, l'une de laine de fil retors à deux fils, et l'autre de fil poil de chèvre. Plusieurs origines sont évoquées comme l'Angleterre ou la Hollande, particulièrement Harlem. On ne commença à le tisser en France que vers 1690. Les peluches se faisaient dans toutes couleurs. Leur principal emploi était pour culottes, vestes et jupons d'hiver. On s'en servait aussi quelquefois pour meubles et pour parements d'autel. (fr)
