  • Een optisch effect dat zich manifesteert als een reeks afwisselend licht en donker gekleurde ringen. Het wordt meestal veroorzaakt door een stuk glas met een rond oppervlak dat ligt op een ander stuk met een plat oppervlak. Hierdoor ontstaat een interferentie van lichtgolven. Genoemd naar de Engelse natuurkundige Sir Isaac Newton, die als eerste onderzoek verrichtte naar de eigenschappen van de ringen. (nl)
