  • Japans woord met de betekenis 'veldvermaak', verwijzend naar de rituele dans- en muziekvormen van de agrarische volksreligie van middeleeuws Japan (ca. 11de-17de eeuw). Dengaku werd uitgevoerd in de rijstvelden, rond de jaarwisseling of tijdens het plantseizoen, in de vroege zomer. De dans en muziek dienden om kami (Shinto-goden) te vermaken en gunstig te stemmen voor een overvloedige oogst, en om de verveling van de landarbeiders te verdrijven. Gedurende de 14de eeuw werden bepaalde vormen van dengaku in de stad geïntroduceerd en aan het hof opgevoerd; door deze vorm van verbreiding liet de dengaku ook zijn invloed gelden op bepaalde klassieke uitvoerende kunsten, zoals het Nō-drama. Dengaku was performed in the rice fields either at New Year's or during the planting season in early summer. The dance and music were meant to entertain the kami (Shinto gods) in the hopes of plentiful crops and to relieve the boredom of the workers. In the 14th century some forms of dengaku were taken to the cities and performed as court entertainment; through this exposure dengaku came to influence some of the classical performing arts such as the Nō drama.
