De beweging ontstond in Zürich in 1916 in reactie op de Eerste Wereldoorlog. De beweging bepleitte het gebruik van ironie, nihilisme, iconoclasme en het absurde, en benadrukte het belang van het toeval bij het maken van gedichten, voorstellingen en kunstwerken, meestal alledaagse voorwerpen in een artistieke omgeving.
