| - Verwijst naar de periode van het koninkrijk van Mataram van de 7de tot de 10de eeuw. De stijlen van deze periode worden bepaald door religieuze, ideologische twisten tussen de shivaïstische Sanjaya-dynastie en de Mahayana-boeddhistische dynastie van de Shailendra’s, die resulteerden in het verwoesten van bouwprogramma's van hindoeïstische candi’s en boeddhistische tempels in de hele Javaanse regio. Later resulteerde de heropleving van inheemse voorouder- en geestculturen die floreerde naast het shivaïsme in gecombineerde stijlen die boeddhistische, hindoeïstische en inheemse elementen incorporeerden in textielproductie, wapenontwerp, manuscriptbeschildering en kalligrafie. Los estilos de este período son impulsados por luchas ideológicas religiosas entre la dinastía Shaivite de Sanjaya y la dinastía budista Mahayana del Shailendras que terminó con arrolladores programas de construcción de candis hindúes y templos budistas a lo largo de toda la región Javanesa. Después, el resurgimiento de los cultos a los antepasados y espíritus indígenas que florecieron junto a Shaivism produjo estilos sintetizados que incorporaron elementos budistas, hindúes, e indígenas en la producción de textiles, diseño de armas, pintura en manuscritos y caligrafía.
